There are no guarantees at BVB for Marco Reus either

Borussia Dortmund fishes 16-year-old top talent

Borussia Dortmund has caught the next top talent. BVB signed the 16-year-old Belgian U19 national player Julien Duranville. The winger last played for Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht.

The cards are being reshuffled at Borussia Dortmund. Coach Edin Terzic has more alternatives and fuels competition. Even for Marco Reus there is no guarantee of a place in the starting XI before the game against SC Freiburg.

NNot everything that Sebastian Kehl had planned for the winter transfer window worked out – but at least a large part of it did. The sporting director of Borussia Dortmund has made some adjustments: after full-back Julian Ryerson (25), Julien Duranville (25) has been joined by an extremely sought-after talent: the winger is just 16 years old, for whom Dortmund have transferred 8.5 million euros to RSC Anderlecht – before Real Madrid or FC Bayern, who are said to have also been interested, could possibly secure the dribbler’s services.

BVB remains true to its line: Approach young, international high-flyers as early as possible – before the even more solvent competition becomes aware of them. “We are sure that he will help us a lot in the medium and long term,” said Edin Terzic. Nothing is more important for coaches than to increase the competitive pressure in the squad. Duranville could already be used in the Bundesliga – due to a change in regulations that BVB successfully pushed for two and a half years ago.

It is a considerable selection that Terzic has, especially in the offensive area: In addition to the two center forwards Sébastien Haller and Youssoufa Moukoko, there are five candidates for the two offensive players in Karim Adeyemi, Gio Reyna, Donyell Malen, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and now Duranville outside positions. This creates friction – and that is desirable.

“We now have the opportunity to be consistent. We can react to bad performances and reward good performances,” explained Terzic. The three victories since the Bundesliga restarted are also due to the fact that almost the entire squad was available. All parts of the team have the opportunity to switch from game to game.

The uncertainty also has advantages

Even before the chasing duel with SC Freiburg on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / live Sky) – both teams have 34 points – several BVB professionals cannot be sure of their place in the starting XI. These included players who were definitely part of the regular team in the first half of the season: Niklas Süle played in central defense instead of Mats Hummels, Ryerson for Guerreiro at back left. Haller was preferred to Moukoko in the center of the attack. Even for Marco Reus, who has recovered from the flu, there is no guarantee that he will return to the team. Because Julian Brandt has recently done well in attacking midfield.

“Marco is our captain, we have always emphasized how important he is to us. We hope that he will come close to 100 percent in the coming weeks,” said Terzic with regard to the now 33-year-old veteran, whose future is still open. His contract expires at the end of the season, talks about expanding the collaboration have so far not brought any results. The situation is similar with Hummels (34).

The uncertainty definitely has advantages: The BVB professionals – whether old or young – feel that the cards are being reshuffled. Players who until recently were considered almost without prospects sense new opportunities: Emre Can, for example, who will stand in for the suspended Salih Öczan on Saturday.

Professionals who, on the other hand, no longer have any prospects, are going or should go. Like Thorgan Hazard, who went on loan to PSV Eindhoven. Only Nico Schulz, the biggest mistake in recent years, remains. The renewed attempt to get rid of the ex-national player also failed. Not everything worked out in the winter transfer window.
