After the defeat against Belgium, the German basketball players have to worry about qualifying for the European Championship. The DBB selection lost on Thursday (February 9th, 2023) in Wolfenbüttel against table leaders Belgium with a clear 44:69, but before the final game on Sunday in Bosnia and Herzegovina has the chance to get the European Championship ticket as one of the four best group second divisions to back up.

The team of national coach Walt Hopkins is still in second place in Group A behind the already qualified Belgians with a record of 3:2 victories despite the clear defeat. The DBB selection thus still has the chance to reach the European Championship finals in Slovenia and Israel (15th to 25th June) as one of the four best runners-up in the ten qualifying groups, it would be the first European Championship participation in twelve years.

A win against Bosnia-Herzegovina is a must

In return, the team should finally win the game in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday (8 p.m.). The Bosnian team lost in the parallel game against North Macedonia with 66:68. Germany’s basketball players have 8 points before the final duel and can only be ousted by the Bosnians (7 points) in the event of a heavy defeat with 40 points or more. Germany won the first leg last November 97:58. A win would still be important for the comparison with the other runners-up in the final billing.

Poor start for DBB team against Belgium

The Hopkins team got off to a poor start and was 9:22 behind after ten minutes. Belgium always scored easy points via Emma Meessemann. The DBB selection got into the game better in the second section, but Belgium was significantly better and more effective.

After the change of sides, the guests showed their qualities again and ultimately gave the German national team no chance. The best throwers for Germany were Alexandra Wilke and Marie Gülich, each with ten points.
