Georginio Wijnaldum made his basic debut for AS Roma on Tuesday after a long injury. The midfielder could not prevent a painful 2-1 league defeat at low flyer Cremonese and saw coach José Mourinho sent to the stands. Juventus did have cause for celebration.
Wijnaldum broke his tibia in August, just after he exchanged Paris Saint-Germain for AS Roma on a rental basis. It cost him, among other things, participation in the World Cup. After a few raids in recent weeks, he was finally able to make his basic debut for Roma on Tuesday.
Cremonese surprisingly took the lead in the first half. Emanuele Valeri prepared the ball with his chest, after which Frank Tsadjout blasted the 1-0 into the top corner. The gatekeeper of the Serie A went to the dressing rooms with a lead.
Shortly after the interruption, Roma had to continue without a coach. Mourinho lashed out at the referee and was sent off. The Portuguese saw from the stands how the Romans came alongside via Gianluca Mancini. In the 83rd minute, Daniel Ciofani scored the verdict with a striking penalty kick.
AS Roma, where Rick Karsdorp came in after the break, remains in fifth place due to the defeat. The Cremonese of trainer Massimiliano Alvini and bench seat Cyriel Dessers leave the last place and hand over the red lantern to Sampdoria.
Pogba’s long-awaited return to Juve
Juventus won 4-2 against Torino later in the evening. Initially, the team of coach Massimiliano Allegri had a hard time with the fellow townsman. Halfway through it was 2-2.
Prodigal son Paul Pogba came on in the 69th minute. The French midfielder returned to Turin after six years at Manchester United last summer, but has not yet played a game for Juventus due to injuries. Pogba also played for ‘The Old Lady’ between 2012 and 2016
Pogba’s long-awaited return was met with loud cheers at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday and promptly turned out to be the start of success. Juventus straightened up and took goals from Gleison Bremer and Adrien Rabiot away from Torino.
Due to the victory, Juventus, which is having a mediocre season, is in seventh place in Serie A. Torino is two places lower.
