Basel separates from coach Frei

The 1-0 loss to Grasshoppers on Saturday was one defeat too many: FC Basel are parting ways with coach Alex Frei with immediate effect. The multiple Swiss champion blamed the sporting performance in the league for the move. After a mixed autumn, the Basel team did not convince even after the World Cup break. They have picked up just one point from three games in the league, dropping to seventh and three points off the bottom of the table.

The decision was made by the former coach of Sturm Graz, Heiko Vogel, who was hired as sports director in winter and who is now stepping in as interim coach. The Swiss ex-international Frei enjoys cult status in Basel. When he returned to the club as a player in 2009, he won the league four times in a row with Basel – at times with Aleksandar Dragovic as a club-mate – scoring 73 goals in 103 games.
