The Margarita Salas de Baleària will integrate dual Wärtsilä engines

The ship ‘Margarita Salas’ of Baleariawhich is under construction at the Gijón facilities of the armon shipyardswill integrate four dual Wärtsilä 9,600 kW engines that will run mainly on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Through this motorization, the maritime operator hopes that the power of the ferry will increase by 10%, with more efficiency and better performance, since the twin of the ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’ will have a whole series of innovations in its design and engineering, the which will make it possible to reach a service speed of 35 knots.

It is worth mentioning that the 31DF engines that the Spanish shipping company’s fast ferry will use will have waterjets, a propulsion control system, as well as fuel storage and supply, thanks to Wärtsilä.

In the same way as its twin ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’, the ‘Margarita Salas’ will be 123 meters long, 28 meters wide and have a capacity to transport 1,200 passengers and 400 vehicles. The new fast ferry is expected to start offering its services in 2024.

In addition to having better quality boats, the operator is increasing its activity. For example, Baleària and Fred Olsen Express have managed to manage one million linear meters of merchandise and more than 100,000 passengers since both companies began operating in the Port of Huelva and the Canary Islands.

Taking this good result into account, the shipping companies have decided to strengthen this freight transport service by adding three weekly frequencies definitively. The trips will be operated by a ship designed and specialized in rolling cargo.
