After separation from Kosmos: Brother Moritz becomes Dominic Thiem’s new manager

Austria’s tennis star Dominic Thiem and his management Kosmos go their separate ways. This was announced late Monday evening by the investment group Kosmos and also confirmed by Moritz Thiem, Dominic’s brother. The collaboration lasted less than two years and was marked by the long injury break of the 2020 US Open winner. Moritz Thiem confirmed to the APA – Austria Press Agency on Tuesday morning that he will act as the new manager.

“There’s not much more to say about it, we ended the partnership with Kosmos without a dispute or anything like that. Which was also very important to us,” commented Moritz Thiem on the separation of Kosmos and Galo Blanco, who has been acting as manager since mid-June 2021. The Spanish investment group recently made headlines after the ITF canceled the much-announced $3 billion Davis Cup deal with the International Tennis Federation.

On Saturday at the Davis Cup in Rijeka, Dominic Thiem said when asked by APA to what extent the failure of the deal made him think: “My management will not make me a better player, my management will not ignite the fire in me either. There it doesn’t matter who manages me. It also has to be said that Kosmos wasn’t very lucky with me. I signed and five days later shredded my wrist. It didn’t go well for me or them. What of It’s not important for me at the moment. It’s important for me that I fully ignite the fire.”

Galo Blanco’s predecessor, Styrian Herwig Straka, had also expressed his opinion on the subject of the APA in Rijeka. “It’s very difficult for me. Obviously, it makes more sense to have native language management, from your own country. Even the greatest players of all time ultimately have many sponsors in their own market. Roger Federer has six or seven sponsors from the Switzerland,” explained Straka.

Negating the market you come from is always dangerous. “In this respect, it makes little sense to have international management, but I don’t think that’s the problem,” the Styrian locates other causes in relation to the difficult phase in Thiem’s career.

On Tuesday morning, Moritz Thiem commented on a possible search for a new manager at APA’s request as follows: “No, we won’t take a new management. Dominic decided that I should take over the whole thing because I’ve been in the background anyway do everything for three years.” You want to keep everything “completely stress-free and on the shortest route”, on which “only Dominic and I make the decisions”.
