50.4 million American adults, or about 20% of the population, are expected to bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. That’s about $16 billion, the American Gaming Association said Tuesday.

The number of American adults planning to bet on the game has increased by 61% from a survey conducted last year, while the value of bets has more than doubled.

The AGA said traditional bets made online through a bookmaker are expected to overtake casual betting for the first time. These figures are explained by the expansion of legal sports betting in the United States. According to the AGA, legal, live sports betting markets are available in 33 states as well as Washington.

This year, the Super Bowl – the biggest television event of the year in the United States – will be played in Glendale, Arizona. This is the first time it has been held in a state where sports betting is legal.
