Thirty-one-year-old Staněk has a complete medal collection from the indoor continental championships, he returned with valuable metal from the last three events and won gold two years ago in Toruń. Adept for further success, the Czech record holder is currently in second place in this year’s European tables.
Pole vaulter Amálie Švábíková is third in the European standings after the Czech record of 472 cm at the weekend. Eighth position in the ranking of the best times among European women is held by fourth-place finisher Lada Vondrová, ninth among men is the fresh Czech champion Matěj Krsek, who will make his debut at the HME. Home champion Tereza Petržilková will also appear on Thursday, and Marcela Pírková, Nikola Bendová and seventeen-year-old Gloria Lurdes Manuel will participate in the relay with her and Vondrová.
Just like Staněk, miler Filip Sasínek, bronze medalist in the 1500m from 2017, will go to the fifth indoor ME, sprinter Zdeňek Stromšík will make his fourth start, octogenarian Filip Šnejdr will make his third start, and all-rounder Ondřej Kopecký will make his debut.
Mile runner Kristiina Mäki and long-distance runner Radek Juška, who narrowly missed the confirmation performance for the start at the HME, will go to Istanbul via a wild card. Both will be at the start for the third time, Juška is a silver medalist from the Prague HME from 2015.
Svoboda, a three-time medalist and European indoor champion from 2011, missed the start in Turkey due to a muscle injury he sustained in Saturday’s home championship final in Ostrava.
