World rankings: Novak Djokovic takes the lead from Carlos Alcaraz – Alexander Zverev slips slightly

Even before the final of the Australian Open, it was clear that the recently injured Carlos Alcaraz would have to give up the lead in the ATP world rankings after 19 weeks – either to Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Since Djokovic prevailed 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 4), 7: 6 (7: 5) in the Melbourne final on Sunday, he will become the new number one in the world (previously fifth).
A circumstance that makes little Alcaraz. “He deserves it,” said the 19-year-old, who has since returned to training after suffering a muscle injury and wants to return to the Buenos Aires tournament on February 13.

Nadal loses in the ranking

The same Nadal, who failed as the defending champion at the Australian Open in round two, is also the biggest loser in the current top ten: the Spaniard, who will be out for six to eight weeks with a hip injury, slipped from second to sixth place away.

Daniil Medvedev, who led the ranking in September, is no longer in the top ten (from eight to twelve). Alexander Zverev also lost another place in the ranking – he is now only 14th after his seven and a half month injury break.

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas (3rd), Andrey Rublev (5th), and Taylor Fritz (8th) set their career high with a place up.

Only Zverev, Otte and Altmaier in the top 100

Holger Rune is ninth for the first time (+1), Frances Tiafoe jumps up to 15 (+2), Lorenzo Musetti to 18 (+1) and semi-finalist Tommy Paul to 19 (+16) – all career bests.

Meanwhile, Ben Shelton (from 99 to 43/+46), Jiri Lehecka (from 71 to 38/+32) and JJ Wolf (from 67 to 48/+19) make the biggest leaps forward in the top 50.

Only Oscar Otte (79./-5) and Daniel Altmaier (91./+1) remain as Germans in the top 100.
