Tim van Rijthoven was injured on Tuesday in his qualifying match for the Australian Open against the Swiss Leandro Riedi. Gijs Brouwer, Arantxa Rus and Eva Vedder also lost in the first round and are not part of the first Grand Slam of the year.
The 25-year-old Van Rijthoven, the number 111 in the world, had already lost the first set 3-6 to Riedi (135). The Dutchman, placed eighth in the qualifications, was immediately broken twice in the second company. He then retired due to an injury.
Van Rijthoven hopes to continue his successful year 2022 this season. He won the grass tournament in Rosmalen in June and then reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. Van Rijthoven was eliminated in the second round of the ATP tournament in Pune last week by the Russian Aslan Karatsev.
Brouwer (162) lost in two sets to the Argentinian Facundo Díaz Acosta: 7-6 (8), 6-4. The Dutchman narrowly lost the first set to the global number 198 via a tiebreak. His opponent then had one break in set two to take the win.
Tallon Greek track, who won his first ATP tournament on Saturday in Pune, India, and Botic van de Zandschulp have been admitted directly to the Australian Open. The tournament in Melbourne starts in a week and lasts until January 29.

Rus (101) surprisingly fell against the Spanish Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro, the number 183 in the world: 4-6, 0-6. In the first set, the number 1 in the Netherlands still offered a good match, but after that she did not take a single game.
Vedder (221) lost to the Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska, who is 88 places lower: 2-6, 3-6. Later in the day, Suzan Lamens will compete against Anastasia Tikhonova from Russia.
Arianne Hartono had a good start in qualifying on Monday. The Dutch was too strong for the Swiss Ylena In-Albon in the first round: 6-4, 6-4.
