Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Greekspoor both reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Pune on Wednesday. Van de Zandschulp beat the Italian Flavio Cobolli on the Indian hard court and the Greek track defeated the Italian Marco Cecchinato. The curtain fell for Tim van Rijthoven in the second round.
Van de Zandschulp (ATP-35) settled in two sets with qualifier Cobolli (ATP-171): 7-5 and 6-4. In the first set, the number two on the seeding list turned around a 5-2 deficit and in the second company he came back from a 4-1 deficit.
For Van de Zandschulp it was his first match of 2023, because he had a bye in the first round thanks to his seeded status. In the quarterfinals, Van de Zandschulp will again meet a qualifier: the German Maximilian Marterer.
Van de Zandschulp reached an ATP final for the first time in his career last year. In Munich he then had to give up against the Dane Holger Rune. Last month, the number 35 in the world became Dutch champion for the third time in a row.
Greek track in quarterfinals possible against Cilic
Greek track (ATP-95) was too strong for Cecchinato (ATP-101) in two sets: 6-4 and 6-4. In the first set he only needed a break in the opening game and in the second set he broke his opponent in the fifth game.
In the quarter-finals, the Greek track will face first-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic or Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena. That party is scheduled for later in the day.
Greek track beat Spaniard Jaume Munar in the first round and thus recorded his first victory on the ATP Tour since August, when he won in Winston-Salem in the United States. He then lost at the US Open and in Tel Aviv, Astana, Florence, Antwerp and Vienna in the first round.
Van Rijthoven is just short against Karatsev
Van Rijthoven lost in two tiebreaks to the Russian Aslan Karatsev: 6-7 (7) and 6-7 (8). Both players kept their service in the first set, after which they both left a set point unused in the tiebreak. Karatsev did strike at his second chance. In the second set he dropped two match points at 4-5. In another exciting tiebreak, he decided the game after all.
With Karatsev (ATP-59), Van Rijthoven (ATP-111) met a formidable opponent. The 29-year-old Russian was the number fourteen in the world two years ago, after reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
This year, Van Rijthoven hopes to build on his sensational previous season, in which he won the Rosmalen grass tournament out of the blue. Then at Wimbledon the fourth round was only the final station. He had to bow to Novak Djokovic in it.
