Arriving in mid-December to the rescue of Tours Métropole Basket in freefall to replace Thomas Drouot, Valérie Garnier confided in her arrival in the men’s environment but also in the state of her team before playing Les Sables d ‘Olonne this Saturday evening.

Fifteen months after the end of his adventure at the head of the French women’s team, Valerie Garnier (58) rebounded in National 1 men near Tours where she signed up for a year and a half. After a successful takeover (3 wins), the native technician from Cholet lives a little more delicate moments with her training and remains on 3 consecutive defeats in N1. A situation which does not worry her but which must change as she admitted to Ouest-France.

“In Toulouse, where we just lost (81-79 on Tuesday), we decided to do certain things. In the first half, we did not achieve them. So we produced a bad first period (53-37). The second, on the other hand, was very good. The N1 is a professional division, in which all teams are competitive. We can’t afford to play less than 40 minutes.”admitted Valérie Garnier.

However, the 58-year-old technician admitted that she wanted to get out of her comfort zone and noted some differences in men’s coaching compared to women’s.

“I had spoken to several coaches I am close to. For them, it was almost obvious. I let myself be guided by my personal desire… I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. And then I like new stories. And there I find that there is a beautiful one to write. […] At the basketball level, it’s faster, intense and committed for the boys. With them, it’s easier in terms of communication. We say things to each other, all things, with respect. Afterwards, every morning, the players arrive with a smile and a desire. And give themselves in a significant way on the ground “

Currently, 11th out of 14 in Pool A, Tours is far from out of the woods and will still have to roll up their sleeves this Saturday evening on the side of Les Sables d’Olonne where the victory will count double against an opponent for the maintenance .
