Tyler Herro stuns the Jazz to close out the 2022 NBA calendar – Basketball Maniacs

The reigning Kia Sixth Man ends the calendar year with a 25-yard field goal that prevents the Jazz from forcing overtime on New Year’s Eve.

A reminder about the Horry Scale: The Horry Scale analyzes a winning buzzer-beater (GWBB) according to the categories of difficulty, game situation (were the team tied or behind?), importance (playoff game or a normal night of November?) and festivities. We then give it an overall grade on a scale of 1 to 5 Robert Horrys, named after the patron saint of last-second answered prayers.

Well, that’s one way to wrap up the 2022 NBA calendar.

With the final NBA pitch of 2022, Tyler Herro beat Utah’s buzzer, saving the Heat from an unlikely meltdown and stripping the soul from the Jazz in front of their home crowd.

It’s the tenth buzzer beater of the season and a spectacular finish to a year that capped off with prolific performances across the league.

GAME SITUATION: In a game that saw 14 draws and 20 lead changes, maybe it was inevitable to get to the last possession. And it was a march of free throws that got us there. Trailing by five with 19.7 seconds left after Bam Adebayo’s free throws, Jordan Clarkson was fouled on a three-pointer and made all three, after missing a pair that would have put Utah within two .

Victor Oladipo is fouled and shoots for Miami, who somehow manage to foul Lauri Markkanen while attempting a three-point shot from right wing. The player then made all three free throws, setting up the fateful final possession with 6.3 seconds left.

DIFFICULTY: Herro takes the inbound and almost gets blocked in the backcourt along the right sideline. A dribble behind the back frees up enough space to advance in the centre. With Clarkson on his flank, Herro bounded across the half court and ran into a runner from just behind the line, while Mike Conley touched without putting in enough effort to risk a foul. Markkanen similarly contested as he backed off, leaving plenty of room for Herro’s clean release. The shot went on target as the scoreboard light indicated there would be no overtime.

CELEBRATION: Herro started to back away while watching the shot, an action to always keep in mind because it makes it seem that one only knew and expected confirmation. His momentum carried him straight to the waiting Heat teammates. He somersaulted into the crowd as hypnotic shoving made him spin in circles.

GRADE: Running the length of the field, nearly losing possession, shooting on the move between three opponents and avoiding overtime on New Year’s Eve? This is Tyler playing Herro. 4 Horrys.
