Towers threatened with a relegation battle: “Not yet consolidated enough”

Hamburg (dpa / lno) – The Hamburg Towers are increasingly in danger of relegation in the basketball Bundesliga. After missing the chance to end the first half of the season with an important win in Frankfurt, the North Germans are under a lot of pressure under their new coach Benka Barloschky. The team had celebrated their first competitive win under Barloschky last Wednesday in the Eurocup, but on Sunday they gave up a 17-point lead in the 93:97 (54:40) defeat at the Frankfurt Skyliners and lost in the Table further on ground.

“In the second half in particular, we had some hair-raising turnovers,” said Anthony Polite. Frankfurt not only used that for easy points, but the opponent got new self-confidence, said the best Towers professional (17 points) and added: “So much that they also hit the very difficult throws at the end.”

The Towers, on the other hand, lost exactly this belief in their own strength in the further course of the game, despite the clear half-time lead. “We’re just not solid enough to deal with such a negative run. But that was clear to me beforehand,” explained Barloschky, emphasizing: “Just because we won a game doesn’t mean everything is different all of a sudden. We are still working, we still have to take the steps.”

Already on Tuesday (7.30 p.m.) his team is challenged again in the Eurocup. Then the eighth of the B group welcomes the table fifth Promitheas Patras from Greece. However, Barloschky decided not to train on Monday morning. Instead, he started a video analysis.

He now expects his pros to go into the game against Greece with a clear and open mind, despite their frustration at the way they lost in Frankfurt. “So that they can focus on the things that need to be focused on,” he said. “The moment I think about the day before yesterday or the day after tomorrow, I worry and other feelings play a role, and I want to avoid that.”

With regard to the guests, Barloschky referred to changes in their squad compared to the first leg, which they narrowly lost. (77:81). “Your outstanding scorer has been replaced. The team has more breadth and depth and has become a bit more unpredictable as a result,” said the coach. “She is very dangerous with a lot of quality in many positions.”
