Austria’s men won gold and bronze in the single-seater on the last day of the Luge World Championships in Oberhof. Jonas Müller successfully defended his half-time lead on Sunday and came out on top with a lead of 0.104 seconds over German Max Langenhan. Third place went to David Gleirscher (+0.121). In the team relay, Madeleine Egle, Jonas Müller and Yannick Müller/Armin Frauscher finally took silver behind Germany.

“It’s just awesome. In front of so many spectators, it’s just a lot of fun,” said the newly crowned world champion Müller in an ORF interview. “I was surprised that it was enough for the very front. I sweated a bit, but it worked out.” For the 25-year-old from Vorarlberg, it is the second gold medal at the World Championships after the one in the sprint competition in 2019. He had already won the silver medal in the sprint in Oberhof.
The man from Vorarlberg set two best times in the ice track and confidently brought home the world championship title. Müller was all the more happy when he had a bad fall during the World Cup in Sigulda on January 8th. Although Müller hardly suffered any physical injuries, the work equipment was a total loss. He had to take a break from the World Cup and European Championships before making his triumphant return.
David Gleirscher was also overjoyed, although he lost a place in the decision, but was only relieved when he crossed the finish line. “When the one or two lights up, you know it’s a medal,” said the 2018 Olympic champion. “But if you have the run in mind, you know that the Max (Langenhan, note) would have been within reach. That’s why there was a bit of trouble, but I’m really happy about the medal.”
Müller fifth ÖRV world champion in a single seater
With Wolfgang Kindl (6th / +0.429) and Nico Gleirscher (10th / +0.587) two more Austrians made it into the top ten in Oberhof. After Kindl (2017), Markus Prock (1996, 1987), Josef Feistmantl (1969) and Herbert Thaler (1959), Müller is the fifth Austrian to celebrate gold in the Olympic discipline. In total, the Austrian Luge Federation (ÖRV) was able to celebrate eight medals in the title fights in Germany.
