The United States will host the Copa América 2024 after advanced talks with Conmebol

Talks between Concacaf and Conmebol, the South American soccer confederation, are in very advanced stages and it is increasingly likely that the next Copa América tournament will be held in the United States in the summer of 2024, multiple sources told ESPN.

Agreements between confederations are always complicated, so there are still some small hurdles to overcome, the sources said, but discussions have heated up considerably since the World Cup in Qatar three months ago, and a possible announcement could be made shortly.

There have already been discussions with some potential venues, according to the sources, and it is possible that several of the cities that will host World Cup matches in 2026 will also be used for the Copa América.

The Copa América features the best international teams from South America, including Brazil and Argentina, but has historically also invited countries to participate.

The United States has participated in the tournament four times previously, most recently in 2016, when it reached the semifinal. That tournament was also held in the United States.

The announcement that the confederations will make is part of an agreement for the next 2024 team and club competitions to be organized jointly and in the Concacaf region.

The 2024 Conmebol Copa América will be played with 16 national teams. The 10 corresponding to the South American continent and six invited teams, belonging to Concacaf, as well as the Centennial edition was played in 2016.

It could be assumed that three of these invited teams would be those from the host countries of the 2026 World Cup: Mexico, Canada and the United States.

However, there will be a qualifying process in Concacaf that will be defined soon and that will take into account the results of the next Concacaf Nations Cup, corresponding to the 2023-2024 season.

Likewise, the Women’s Gold Cup, highly successful in its last edition, will be played in 2024 with eight teams from the qualifying process in the CONCACAF region and four CONMEBOL teams that will play in the tournament as invited guests.

The two CONCACAF teams that will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics (United States and Jamaica or Canada) will receive a bye to the 2024 Concacaf Gold Cup W. The remaining six Concacaf teams will be determined through the Concacaf W Qualifying 2023.

The four invited CONMEBOL teams that will participate have been determined based on the results of the 2022 Copa América Femenina: Brazil (champion) Colombia (runner-up), Argentina (third place) and Paraguay (fourth place).

Finally, the announcement will include the new holding of a club competition, also to be played in the CONCACAF region and under the Final Four format, with the participation of the finalist teams in the most important club competitions of each confederation.

The finalists of the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, CONMEBOL has not yet defined who the two representatives would be, but they could be the two Copa Libertadores finalists or the champion of this competition and the winner of the Conmebol Copa Sudamericana. Whoever these are would meet in a unique venue in the CONCACAF region in its first edition in 2024 to define the best club on the continent.
