The Santiago Pepe Vázquez, a great women’s basketball

Pepe Vázquez from Santiago was presented yesterday as the new head coach of Perfumerías Avenida de Salamanca, one of the most important women’s basketball clubs in Europe, so much so that it won the Euroleague in 2011 and was a finalist in 2021.

According to what the president of Perfumerías Jorge Recio, José Jesús Pepe Vázquez Mougán (Santiago, 1980) was “the first, second and third option” to replace Roberto Íñiguez, who presented his resignation last week.

After shining for five years as coach of Embutidos Pajariel Bembibre in the highest category of women’s basketball, Pepe Vázquez thus returns to the Salamanca club, where he was already in the 2017-2018 season as an assistant to Miguel Ángel Ortega, winning the three national titles.

Trained in the Galician capital in sports work at the La Salle school, Pepe Vázquez has also trained Burgos, Ensino and CREF Madrid, part of a career that grew when he took charge of Perfumerías Avenida, a club that last season had a budget of 820,000 euros, according to the magazine stage 23.

After 17 games, Perfumerías is third in the league with 12 victories, two behind UNI Girona (leader) and Valencia Basket. And in group B of the Euroleague, they have five wins in nine games, two behind Sopron. In the current team from Salamanca there are international players like Silvia Dominguez and Maite Cazorla.
