Atlético Madrid lost Thursday night against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. But more than the result, the Colchoneros are angry with the arbitration they consider pro Madrid.

Atlético Madrid can not digest their elimination in the quarter-finals of the King’s Cup, Thursday against Real Madrid (3-1 ap). In front from the 19th minute thanks to Morata, the other club from the capital was joined 10 minutes from the end by their sworn enemy via Rodrygo before Benzema and Vinicius sealed the score in extra time. But more than the result, the Colchoneros are angry and one man alone sums up the wrath of the Whites and Reds: Cesar Soto Grado, the match referee. The band of Antoine Griezmann, holder against Real, denounced double standards decisions throughout the meeting. They do not understand how Dani Ceballos was spared a second yellow card for a knee strike on Thomas Lemar when Stefan Savic, is excluded after a second warning for a tripped foot on Eduardo Camavinga. After the match, coach Diego Simeone gave his version: “For me, we had a very good game until the 70th minute and Ceballos’ fault, nobody cares that he didn’t receive a second yellow card, but we should have finished 11 against 10. It didn’t happen and then Savic was sent off. In the wake of the mixed zone, goalkeeper Jan Oblak said the defender’s exclusion was “unfair” but that they were “used to this kind of thing” when they “came to the Bernabeu”. After the coach and the doorman, Friday evening, Miguel Angel Gil, the president of Atlético Madrid, in turn stepped up to the plate through a press release published on the club’s website.

Gil: “We got used to the system”

In a long tirade, Miguel Angel Gil expressed his feelings after his team’s elimination: “I have the greatest respect for the refereeing collective and I am convinced that their intention is always the best, but anyone looking from the outside can see that for decades it has almost always been the same. Unfortunately, this does not surprise anyone, it is no longer news. It is something very obvious and you just have to remember the story”.

In the process, he entrusted a greater reflection around the fact that Real Madrid is almost systematically favored by arbitration. “Madrid is a club with a very strong environment, with a lot of interests around it, recognizes the manager. They create such pressure that it is normal for it to affect the people who have to make decisions. They are aware of what awaits them if they are harmed by a mistake or even a success. It is common to campaign against those they see as harming them. […] The system is like that and since Atléti, we cannot change it alone.[…] We got used to the system. » The next confrontation between the two rivals in the capital, scheduled for February 26, promises to be explosive.
