The American Express: Jon Rahm wins and becomes world number three

Second consecutive victory on the PGA Tour for Jon Rahm who, two weeks after the Hawaiian Champions Tournament, won Sunday at La Quinta. The Spaniard took four laps to break away from rookie Davis Thompson, after a birdie on 16 and then an unlucky 10-yard putt from the American on 17.

Author of a final 68, against 69 for Thompson, Rahm finished with a total of -27. This is his ninth title on the American circuit, which also allows him to occupy the head of the FedExCup for the first time in his career. Impeccable since the fall, the new 3rd player in the world has even accumulated four trophies in his last seven outings.

Reaction from the Basque, author of only 3 bogeys in California: “ I felt in the “zone” all week. Anytime I’ve felt that way in the past, I’ve ended up winning, just because it takes a lot of the pressure off a lot of aspects of my game, knowing that basically I’m going to get the shot that I envisage. And it’s a really unique area to get into and of course, I wish that happened to me more often! »

In third place, in -25, we find Xander Schauffele. The Californian stood out by pulling off an extremely rare albatross, hitting hole 5 (par 5), in just two shots. The Olympic champion finished 3rd in -25 (62), tied with Chris Kirk. Finally, note that with one shot less, Scottie Scheffler could have taken over the world number one spot from Rory McIlroy. The American, second player in the world, only finished 11th at La Quinta (67, -22), one length from the top 9 which was required for him.
