Ten Hag Understandably Man City Question Fernandes Goal

Manchester

Manchester United’s victory over Manchester City was marred by Bruno Fernandes’ controversial goal which was the turning point for the rise of the Red Devils. Manager Erik ten Hag also understands if opposing players question this decision.

MU won 2-1 in the match which took place at Old Trafford, Saturday (14/1/2023). Jack Grealish’s header which nestled in David de Gea’s goal in the 60th minute was returned by Fernandes in the 78th minute.

Casemiro’s through ball led to Marcus Rashford who ran into the penalty box, but the 25-year-old striker did not take it because he was in an offside position. From behind, Fernandes was there to help.

It was the Portuguese midfielder who finally fired a shot which the Man City goalkeeper, Ederson, failed to save. Despite the visitors’ protests, the goal was finally validated by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Fernandes’ goal was declared valid because Rashford did not touch the ball, even though it was aimed at him. Then there is the distance between the Man City players and the ball, so Rashford’s movements are considered not to affect the game and not to disturb the Man City players.

The goal made the momentum belong to MU. Rashford then turned things around in the 82nd minute with a goal from close range, while locking in a 2-1 win for MU.

After the match, Ten Hag was asked for comments regarding Fernandes’ goal. The Dutch manager naturally considered the attitude of the Man City players who questioned the legitimacy of the goal.

“I can see it from the other side as well. It was a confusing moment for the opposing backline. The rules say Marcus doesn’t touch the ball, and isn’t involved,” Ten Hag told BT Sport, quoted by the BBC.

“Bruno is coming from behind, but I can see it from the opponent’s point of view,” he explained.

MU has now climbed to third place in the Premier League standings with 38 points from 18 matches, only one point away from Man City who is in second place.
