Surprise win: Gabriel Clemens is in the semi-finals of the Darts World Cup – Sport

The German darts professional Gabriel Clemens is unexpectedly in the semi-finals at the World Cup in London. The 39-year-old from Saarwellingen sensationally won his quarter-finals on Sunday evening 5-1 against world number one Gerwyn Price from Wales. The entry of the “German Giant” into the round of the top eight was the first of a German darts player in the history of the world championship.

Clemens had no chance against the 2021 world champion in the first set. But Price could not maintain his level for long, while Clemens acted at a consistently high level and gradually unnerved the high favorite. After falling 1:3 in sets, Price played with ear protection, but even this highly unusual measure didn’t turn things around. Clemens’ opponent in the semifinals on Monday is Michael Smith from England.

The vice world champion from 2019 and 2022 prevailed 5: 3 against compatriot Stephen Bunting in his quarter-final duel on Sunday afternoon. Smith led clearly for a long time and finally used his second match dart to make it 3-1 in the eighth set. The last quarter-final in the evening is the match between Michael van Gerwen (Netherlands) and Chris Dobey (England). In the early afternoon, Dimitri van den Bergh reached the World Cup semifinals for the first time in his career. The 28-year-old Belgian beat Welshman Jonny Clayton 5-3.
