Repressed demonstrations: become blind, a sportswoman does not regret anything

A member of Iran”s women’s archery team said on Tuesday that she had no regrets after losing her sight in her left eye for good while taking part in a protest suppressed by law enforcement in the west from the country.

Appearing in a video without a headscarf and her left eye hidden by a blindfold, Kosar Khoshnoudikia explained that she was hit by gunfire while taking part in a demonstration in early December in the Kurdish town of Kermanshah.

“I received three shots in the right hand and one shot in the left eye. What happened does not make me sad. I lost some things, but I gained a lot. I have no regrets that I was there that day, at that time,” she said in this video posted by the London-based NGO Iran International TV.

Despite multiple operations, she has now permanently lost her sight in her left eye, Norway-based human rights NGO Hengaw said in a statement. Iran has been rocked by protests since the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, following her arrest by vice squad for violating the Islamic Republic’s dress code.

At least 481 people have been killed in the crackdown on the protest movement, according to the Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights. Amnesty International and other human rights NGOs accuse Iranian security forces of rendering several people partially or totally blind during these violently suppressed demonstrations.

Security forces deliberately shot people at close range, using live ammunition and metal balls, Amnesty claims.
