He always has a saying on his lips!

For the big coaching anniversary, Jürgen Klopp (55) only had a zero number. But the German still had a casual saying after his 1000th football game as a professional coach – and teased a little against a coach colleague.

Klopp: “I think Arsène Wenger lost his 1000th game 6-0. So I was really glad that I was spared something like that.”

Klopp’s Liverpool FC played 0-0 against Chelsea on their anniversary on Saturday. Coach icon Arsène Wenger (73) celebrated his 1000th anniversary as Arsenal coach against Chelsea in 2014 – and experienced a 0-6 debacle, albeit away at Stamford Bridge. By the way, the Frenchman has played 1228 competitive games with Arsenal alone. Wenger now works for Fifa.

1000 games – a coach does not celebrate such an anniversary every day. That’s why Klopp got a lot of messages before his historic kick. And explains: “And not all of them were nice.”

But much more important: In terms of sport, Liverpool are on the up again. After two clear Premier League defeats by the Reds at the beginning of the new year (1: 3 in Brentford and a 0: 3 in Brighton), the coach saw “a small step” forward in the goalless draw against the London club.

“I expect progress,” emphasized Klopp. “And I think that was definitely a step up from the last league game and that’s important.”

However, the 0:0 did not help in the table. Immediately after the game, Liverpool were nine points off a Champions League spot.

So one thing is clear: victories are needed.

Klopp: “We can only reduce the gap if we win, and we didn’t do that today.” Still: “I’ve seen progress, that’s good and we have to keep going like this.”

In the FA Cup, the “Reds” continued to tremble during the week with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, showing the first upward trend with a dream goal from Harvey Elliott (19).
