No, no, no: Viktor Axelsen fails and loses the final in the India Open | BT Badminton

The – almost – everything-winning Viktor Axelsen tried something very, very rare on Sunday.

He lost a final in a major international badminton tournament.

Because in the final of the Super 750 tournament India Open, the Danish world star threw himself around with errors, and then he lost to Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who took the victory with 22-20, 10-21 and 21-12.

It is the first time in his career that Axelsen has lost to Vitidsarn, who has previously lost to the Dane six times.

Axelsen delivered a performance that was a long way from his usual high standard – but he was also put under tremendous pressure by the particularly well-played Vitidsarn, who took his biggest win of his career.

And that Axelsen loses a final – that is one of the rarities.

The defeat in the final ends a streak of – hold on tight – 12 consecutive finals wins for the Danish world number seven.

In the coming week, the Indonesia Masters awaits, but it is not certain that the Dane will choose to compete in that tournament.
