NFL: Injured in the right elbow, the quarter of the 49ers Brock Purdy represents an uncertain case

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had to be removed from the NFL National Association Finals against the Philadelphia EaglesSunday, following a right elbow injury.

The incident occurred during the first quarter when Purdy was hit in the arm by linebacker Haason Reddick as he attempted a pass. On the sequence, Purdy lost control of the ball which was recovered by the Eagles.

Purdy was then examined on the sidelines and the 49ers announced that he was a questionable case for a return to play.

Purdy was replaced by Josh Johnson. Hired by the 49ers in December, Johnson has attempted only two assists this season. The latter, however, took a hard tackle early in the third quarter and he had to follow the protocol to assess if he suffered from a concussion. So Purdy resumed his position for a play and he handed the ball to Christian McCaffrey for a run.

Purdy has had an incredible rise this season as he managed to win the 49ers third quarter job after being the very last player selected in the last draft. Injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo forced the 49ers to call on Purdy.

Purdy’s withdrawal from the game was added to the absence of running back Elijah Mitchell, ruled out with a groin injury.

Mitchell rushed for 279 yards and scored two touchdowns in just five games during the regular season. He added 51 yards in the playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys last week.

To replace him, the 49ers brought in Tevin Coleman, who was on the practice squad.

As expected, star running back Christian McCaffrey is in uniform for the 49ers, having faced the Cowboys despite a calf injury last week. He did not train this week.

McCaffrey leads the 49ers with 1,403 yards from the line of scrimmage and 12 touchdowns in the regular season and since the start of the playoffs, although he only joined the team in the seventh week of activities. He has scored at least one touchdown in eight straight games.

Garoppolo is sidelined with a foot injury. However, he could be available if the 49ers advance to the Super Bowl.
