New edition of the National Sports Games (JDN)

With a total of 29 official disciplines; 23 conventional and 6 Paralympic sports, the final stage of the XL National Sports Games Icoder 2022 – 2023 will be held from January 18 to February 1 in Alajuela, Palmares, Grecia, San Ramón, Naranjo and San Carlos.

This was announced by the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (Icoder) this Thursday, January 12, during a press conference held at the National Stadium, in which it was also made official that the double Paralympic medalist of Tokyo 2020, Sherman Guity Guity , will be the dedicated of the jousting.

The conference was chaired by Donald Rojas Fernández, national director of Icoder, accompanied by Minor Monge Montero, head of the Sports and Recreation Department, and Alonso León Mena, head of the Sports and Recreation Programs and Projects Unit.

The National Sports Games return with a strengthened and more inclusive model, in which more sports for people with disabilities are incorporated into the traditional disciplines of the event.

Palmares was the venue for the first fairs, in December 1976, which will include men’s soccer, boccias, skating and boxing. San Ramón will receive table tennis, taekwondo, judo, Paralympic table tennis and chess; Naranjo, weightlifting and karate; Greece, women’s soccer, basketball and volleyball; and San Carlos, triathlon and cycling, both road and mountain.

The remaining official sports will take place in the central canton of Alajuela: handball, athletics, beach volleyball, Paralympic athletics, artistic gymnastics, baseball, tennis, wheelchair tennis, futsal, swimming, Paralympic swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and basketball wheelchair bound.

Simultaneously, eleven exhibition disciplines will be presented: archery and rugby in Sarchí; urbanathlon and skateboarding in Poás; jiu jitsu and wrestling in San Mateo; goalball and cheerleading in Athens; power lifting and mountain sports in Zarcero; and virtual motorsports in Alajuela, Sarchí and San Ramón.

More than 5,000 duly classified athletes will attend the event; 2,384 women and 2,759 men, representing 76 cantonal sports and recreation committees and three municipal district councils.

The Costa Rican para-athlete Sherman Guity Guity will be dedicated to the XL National Sports Games Icoder 2022 – 2023.

Guity, gold and silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, will have the honor of lighting the cauldron at the inauguration of the great national sports festival, this Wednesday, January 18, starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Rafael Bolaños Stadium, located in El Coyol de Alajuela.

The dedication of the Games is not only a recognition of Guity’s example and brilliant international career, but also the representation of a new model of national sports jousts, which from this edition onwards incorporate six sports disciplines into its official program for People with disabilities.

The sports will be: wheelchair basketball, paralympic athletics, paralympic swimming, paralympic table tennis, wheelchair tennis, weightlifting.

The inaugural act will take place on Wednesday, January 18 at 5:00 in the afternoon at the Rafael Bolaños stadium in El Coyol de Alajuela; and the next day the competitions will begin. @mundiario
