National team: Hansi Flicks DFB plan after World Cup debacle – FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM

The closed meeting lasted three days: Before Christmas, the DFB coaching team around Hansi Flick (57) met again to analyze the German elimination at the World Cup in Qatar and to draw the conclusions.

Above all, the lack of consistency – in defense and in the end – as well as the negative side effects were discussed. There was never any euphoria or joy at the World Cup, and there was a heavy veil over the project in Qatar from the start. Be it due to the concerns in advance, the political debates and the resulting consequence that only very few DFB fans made the trip to the Middle East.

In the direction of the EM 2024, a change in mood must begin. Above all, the DFB team can take care of that itself. However, there are only test matches until the tournament. The search for the opponents is ongoing. According to SPORT BILD information, a duel with vice world champion France is planned for 2023. World Cup feared opponents Japan, against whom Germany lost 1:2, is another candidate. The first games after the failed World Cup are scheduled for March: against a European and a South American opponent.

In addition, during a shutdown phase – probably in September/October 2023 – there will be a big trip: The Flick team will then contest two tests in the USA and Mexico. The next World Cup will take place there in 2026.

Important for the DFB officials: Finding players who are fully motivated for the friendlies that excite viewers. In addition to the established stars, players should develop in the direction of the European Championship.

In focus here: Players like Jamal Musiala (19), Florian Wirtz (19), Nico Schlotterbeck (23) and David Raum (24). Flick also observes the development of talents such as Stuttgart’s Josha Vagnoman (22), Kevin Schade (21/since last week with Brentford) or Augsburg attacker Mergim Berisha (24).
