Miguel Díaz: “Spanish tennis was not very happy with the new Davis Cup”

Ethe president of the Real Federacin Espaola de Tenis, Miguel Daz Romn, has declared that the body he presides overor are you “very happy” with the new format of the Davis Cup, so he hopes that it will return to a competition with a different system “since this format It hasn’t been the best.”

Miguel Diaz, who is in Ceuta On the occasion of the celebration in the city of the Interterritorial Commission of the RFET, which is attended by the 19 presidents of territorial federations, he also referred to the company Kosmos Tennis, chaired by ex-soccer player Gerard Piqu and that it organized the Davis Cup with the new format. “Kosmos has tried to change the format and it has not given the results that were thought. Hopefully it will return to something intermediate, because for our part we were not very happy in the last year of the experience either.”

“Of the three years with the new format we won the first edition, it has been held in Spain these three years but, despite that, as the Spanish Federation we see that when teams from other countries come there is not that hobby that can drag as it happens in football, so it has not given the results we thought”.

In his opinion, the Davis Cup “must change and you can go back to the old format in three days in five venueswhich would be a good thing, as long as the best players were achieved through financial incentives or ATP points.

He bet on recovering the previous system “because the fans really took that vacation weekends, bullrings were filled with 15,000 people and created a lot of fans. What was now is not the best for tennis in general,” he insisted.

Regarding the possibility of ending this matter in court, he commented that both Kosmos and the ITF denounce mutually because both one and the other will say that they have breached what was agreed” and reiterated that “if we know how to do it from now on, the format, if it is changed, could give good results”.
