The top 10 players

  • Iga Swiatek (POL/WTA 1) s. Jule Niemeier (GER/WTA 69) 6:4, 7:5
  • Jessica Pegula (USA/WTA 3) n. Jaqueline Cristian (ROU/WTA 161) 6:0, 6:1
  • Coco Gauff (USA/WTA 7) s. Katerina Siniakova (CZE/WTA 46) 6-1, 6-4
  • Maria Sakkari (GRE/WTA 6) s. Yue Yuan (CHN/WTA 117) 6:1, 6:4

Every Swiatek made a successful start in Melbourne. The Pole had to fight against the German Jule Niemeier for exactly 2 hours. In the 2nd set, the world number 1 made up for a break deficit and, thanks to 4 games in a row, still got the 6:4, 7:5 victory. In the next round, Swiatek meets Camila Osorio (COL/ WTA 84).

Not long engaged in their first task Jessica Pegula. The world number 3, clear favorite against Jaqueline Cristian, needed just 59 minutes for her 2-set win. When it came to the number of winners, the Romanian was still able to keep up with her competitor (both 13), but she committed almost three times as many unforced errors as the American (32 to 12). Pegula’s opponent in the 2nd round is Aliaksandra Alexandra Sasnowitsch (WTA 38).

Katerina Siniakova challenged the American in what was at times a high-class first-round game Coco Gauff some off. The strong Czech was able to stand up to the 18-year-old, especially in the second round. Gauff only knew how to use her 7th match point and made it clear after 1:15 hours that she was in the second round. There she meets the British Emma Raducanu, who defeated the German Tamara Korpatsch in 2 sets. Siniakova will now focus on the doubles – the Czech is the defending champion in Melbourne.

After 94 minutes, Yue Yuan’s debut in the main draw of the Australian Open came to an end. The Chinese lost Maria Sakkari in 2 sets with 1:6, 4:6. Another favorite easily prevailed in the opening round. The Greek continues with the duel against the Russian Diana Schneider (WTA 106).

Gadecki lets the home fans cheer

Kept in a duel between two up-and-coming stars Olivia Gadecki (WTA 199) the upper hand. The 20-year-old Australian, who came to her Grand Slam premiere thanks to a wildcard, defeated 19-year-old Polina Kudermetova (WTA 182) 7: 5, 6: 1. This caused a lot of enthusiasm, especially among the home fans.
