Recipient of an invitation, Clara Burel qualified for the round of 16 of the Lyon tournament by beating Ana Bogdan, yet better ranked than her, in two sets.

After a complicated day on Monday, with the eliminations of Alizé Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic, Tuesday went much better for the French clan at the WTA tournament in Lyon. After Caroline Garcia, it is indeed Clara Burel who won her ticket for the round of 16. The 21-year-old Breton, 107th in the world after her elimination in the second round of the Australian Open, from which she came from the qualifications, was opposed to a higher ranked player, Ana Bodgan (68th). And she won 7-5, 6-4 in 1h50. In difficulty with her serve at the start of the match (6 double faults in the first set), the Frenchwoman found herself behind 3-1, but she suddenly found her tennis to chain four games and lead 5-3. However, Burel missed three set points as she served to win the set at 5-4, and was unbroken. A short-lived fright for the 2018 junior world champion, who took over the opposing service before concluding on the next game (7-5).

And now, Potapova!

In the second set, the two players held their face-off, until 2-2 where Burel scored the break, then led 4-2. At 4-3, her opponent called the doctor to take pills and it proved effective as she broke straight away to return to 4-4. But the Frenchwoman was solid to take the service of the Romanian again, then conclude this meeting at 40-30 on her first match point. So here she is in the round of 16 of a WTA tournament for the first time since the end of July on the ground of Warsaw. It will be against the Russian Anastasia Potapova, 43rd in the world, whom she has never faced before. Also note this Tuesday the victory of the defending champion, the Chinese Shuai Zhang (23rd), to the detriment of the American Madison Brengle (6-3, 6-2).
