WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?

To talk about what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is, what better than one of the most prepared teachers and with an important career such as Iván Burgos, who stated that this discipline has been practiced in Querétaro for approximately 16 years, emphasizing that it is a different and complete sport, in which you learn many things about yourself, but above all, it promotes equality when entering the Tatami or Mat, which is the floor where this sport is practiced.

“What we practice is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which, as its name says, comes from Brazil and has been practiced there for approximately 100 years. It came from Japan and here in Querétaro it must be about 15 or 16 years old before people will practice it and I have 13 years of practicing it. It is a very different sport that is growing, it is a difficult sport because it requires you to have physical contact, it is not like another sport where you can hit a bag and so on, here you have to have physical contact by force, even if you practice it as hobby, but it is a sport that teaches you a lot of mental agility, gives you a lot of discipline and leads you to discover things that you never imagined could be inside you, many mention that it has changed their lives and the coolest thing about this is that It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you do, but it is a sport that once you step on the tatami or the mat, which is the floor where we train, everyone is the same, it is perfect for people to come to ask questions and practice it ” .

DIFFERENCE FROM OTHER SPORTS

Iván Burgos stated that being a contact sport, it is important to make the difference between Boxing, Taekwondo and what Jiu Jitsu is, especially since the first ones are about hitting and the second one is more about making the opponent stand up. Surrender with keys, strangulations, without having to hit your opponent, in addition to the fact that the training sessions are different, since in Jiu Jitsu you necessarily have to do it with another athlete.

“There are two ways in which you can approach a combat sport, which is striking or hitting, what we know as boxing, taekwondo, muay thai and Grapplin, which is part of Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling. It is quite similar to judo and wrestling, the difference is that the combat or fight ends until you submit someone, it is the biggest differentiator of what people know or have seen of wrestling or judo, here it is strangling, levers to the arms, locks to the legs, that’s the difference”.

BASIC RULES

Like other sports, there are basic rules that must be followed to practice this sport, but the most important is that you cannot hit your opponent, and you can practice with a kimono and its ribbon, or with clothing more comfortable such as shorts and a shirt, reiterating that none of these should have metal parts, to avoid hurting the opponent inappropriately.

“More than anything, what it is about is that there are no blows, like Judo and Wrestling, within that the basics, not pinching, not biting, outside of that, it is just a matter of taking great care of your cervicals, due to the issue that they are very delicate. There are two ways in which you can practice it, one is Jiu Jitsu with a Kimono and the one with no Kimono, for the latter it is recommended to wear shorts without closures, no metal parts and a shirt for swimming that is known as a rashguard and for the another, is the kimono with your ribbon”.

RECOMMENDED AGE

This outstanding teacher of this sports discipline, pointed out that this sport does not have an age limit, however, it is advisable to start practicing it from the age of 5, because at that age children already have a little more concentration in the things they do , while in adulthood, in many parts of the world there are people up to 80 years of age who continue to practice it in a very good way.

“It is recommended more or less from the age of 5, which is when children already have a little more idea, they can concentrate for a little longer on what they are doing and the truth is that there is no age limit, lately it has come out around the world notes from 68-year-olds, 72-year-olds who decided to jump in, they found the right place to train and they haven’t had a major problem, obviously not as demanding as the youngsters or the competitors, but it’s more or less the range of competitiveness, There are teachers who are over 80 years old and 45 practicing it is a sport for a longer age”.

WHERE CAN YOU PRACTICE?

Being one of the disciplines that have grown the most in our entity, there are also several Dojos where you can practice, however Iván Burgos stated that you always have to be careful that they are certified places and that the teachers who teach the classes are tapes black, so one option is to go with him to the Social Center of Colonia Palmas, where they have different hours for all ages and even if they are beginners in this sport.

“Fortunately there are many dojos, there are more and more, what I recommend is that at the dojo that you are going to join, check that this certificate, that your teacher has a good origin from his black belt, especially in Querétaro there are many black belts that they are giving class, obviously he invited them to come here to the social center of the Palmas neighborhood, we have several schedules, for beginners we have hours from 8:30 to 10:00 in the morning and from 19:00 to 20:20. Here the children’s class is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and if the quorum is together there will be a class from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., we have special classes for women, they are taught by two of my students, national champions So they are in very good hands, they are Karen Godoy and Sofía Treviño”.
