Italian Legend Gianluca Vialli Dies

Sad news came from Italian football. Pizza Country football legend Gianluca Vialli has died. RIP!

Vialli made it public about his illness in November 2018. At that time Vialli said he had recovered from cancer.

However, the fear of the cancer reappearing remains and that is what happened in December 2021. For a year Vialli has been trying to recover for the second time from the disease.

He even left his post as assistant coach of the Italian national team last December. But God’s destiny said differently because Vialli had to close his eyes forever, Friday (6/1/2023) afternoon WIB or morning local time.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the sad news. As a result, this weekend Serie A will hold a tribute to commemorate Vialli’s departure.

According to FIGC, Vialli is an important figure in Italian football and played a major role in helping Italy win Euro 2020 with Mancini.

Vialli, 58 years old, born in Cremona started his career at Cremonese in 1980, before moving to Sampdoria in 1984. During his eight years there, Vialli established himself as one of the best Italian strikers.

He also contributed to giving the 1990/1991 Serie A title, three Coppa Italia titles, the Winners’ Cup, and once finished runner-up in the 1991/1992 Champions League when he lost to Barcelona in the final.

Vialli formed a lethal partnership with Roberto Mancini in Sampdoria’s attack line. Vialli then left Sampdoria to join Juventus in 1992 and played four years there.

Chelsea was Vialli’s last club before retiring in 1999. During his career, Vialli made 259 goals in 673 appearances, including 141 goals while at Sampdoria, 53 goals at Juventus and 40 goals at Chelsea.

Vialli’s managerial career began when he handled Chelsea on February 21, 1998 replacing Ruud Gullit. He won the FA Cup, English League Cup, Community Shield, Winners Cup and European Super Cup.

He briefly coached Watford after being sacked by Chelsea in September 2000. However, Vialli only lasted one season before retiring from coaching since June 14 2002.

At the level of the Italian national team, Vialli has 59 caps with a score of 16 goals. He made appearances at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, as well as Euro 1992.
