Gavi’s New Barcelona Contract Rejected by LaLiga

Barcelona

Gavi’s new contract with Barcelona was rejected by LaLiga. This makes the 18-year midfielder still registered with the old contract.

ESPN reported, Gavi, who is currently 18 years old, is a Barcelona academy player with a contract until 2023. At the end of last year, he agreed to extend his contract until 2026, with a release clause of 1 billion Euros.

Gavi’s new contract, which Barcelona registered with LaLiga this week, will see him ‘grade up’ as a main squad player. However, these efforts did not get the green light from the operator of the Spanish League.

This was due to the salary restrictions given to Barcelona. If the Gavi contract is registered, then they will pass the existing salary cap. This also makes Ronald Araujo’s new contract, which also cannot be registered until 2026.

Barcelona initially hoped that the departures of Gerard Pique and Memphis Depay would ease the way for them to sign up for Gavi’s new contract, but this proved not to be enough. LaLiga says Barcelona must do more than that.

Recently, Barcelona took LaLiga to a local court for refusing to grant a salary cap increase of 15 per cent, as other clubs have. The Blaugrana considers this to be discrimination.

But LaLiga itself has another view. They refuse to raise the ceiling on their salary cap as Barcelona pulled the economic lever multiple times last summer, allowing them to spend up to 656.5 million euros this season.

If another 15 percent increase is given to Barcelona, LaLiga assesses that other teams will be at a disadvantage. At this time, it is not yet known what the outcome of the lawsuit will be.

Gavi and Araujo themselves believe Barcelona will overcome this problem in the near future. If they fail to be registered this January, then it is likely that their new contract will be registered this summer.
