At the cup quarter-finals of the women’s teams Benfica and Sporting Lisbon on Saturday, some spectators must have rubbed their eyes in astonishment, because for the first time in the history of football a referee pulled out a white card!

What happened?

Just before the break, with Benfica women 3-0 up, a player on the bench became nauseous.

The team doctors of both teams immediately ran to the player and treated her. After the athlete got better and the treatment was successfully completed, referee Catarina Campos made an appearance. She showed the paramedics the white card.

Because unlike yellow or red cards, with which players are punished, the white card is intended to reward special fair play actions.

It was introduced in Portugal as part of a Fifa initiative to recognize fair behavior by players, coaches and staff.
