The Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez has announced, through a video published on his official Instagram account, that will withdraw from the tracks after playing some tournaments this 2023.
“Dear friends. The time has come to share with you an event that most athletes think will never happen. After more than 20 years of competing on the circuit, I have decided to end what one day began as an ill· lusion and it has ended up becoming the most beautiful and exciting job in the world” he explains in his voice accompanied by images that capture some of the most relevant moments of his career.
“Any tennis player’s dream is to be able to say goodbye on a tennis court and that’s why I will play some tournaments next year to end my career. The idea is to be able to play some of the tournaments that for different reasons have meant something during these last twenty years” he points out without specifying which ones.
Likewise, he says: “I’ve always believed that there was life after tennis, but as the time approaches, I’m beginning to realize how much I’m going to miss it. Tennis has given me everything in lifemuch more than that five-year-old boy could imagine when his father, one Christmas, put a wooden racket in his hand.”
“I look back and I can only be grateful for all that I have achieved and all the personal lessons that tennis has given me. It has been the best college possible. I take away countless beautiful things, but one holds a special place , the amount of incredible people I have met and who have been with me along the way. We still have many moments left to live together off the slopes” he adds.
The tennis player also had a special memory for his family, his sponsors, the press and the fans: “I also want to thank all the people who have helped me achieve my goals and be a better person during all these years”.
“There are many of you who have played an important role at some specific moment. You are the main reason why I have been able to prolong my career so much, life is much easier when you surround yourself with special people”, he says
Feliciano López accumulates so far five Davis Cup titles i seven individual titles in ATP tournaments. In addition, as a doubles player he has achieved a fourth place in the 2012 Olympic Games and six final victories in ATP tournaments.
