Espanyol, the team that shines the most in the new league presided over by Gerard Piqué

BarcelonaDespite not being part of the list of registered teams, Espanyol will be one of the clubs that will shine the most in the first season of the new amateur league promoted and chaired by Gerard Piqué, the Kings League. Eight of the 12 founding teams of this competition, in fact, will have at least one representative with a past at the Spanish club. At the moment there are already 11 (a coach and a dozen players) participants who will paint white-and-blue a competition that was born with the idea of entertaining and catching the younger public by breaking with the classic rules of football conventional

The fact that the first edition of the Kings League is contested in a pavilion located in the Zona Franca, in the port of Barcelona, means that a handful of old glories of teams such as Espanyol and Barça can be considered as hosts of this appointment. And precisely this makes them attractive profiles for different people streamers who preside over the dozen clubs in the Kings League. Each president can choose two players freely, outside of the draft which must surpass the other 10 members of the team. These, in addition, enjoy a special regime that allows them to play only when their other jobs allow them: most former Spanish players, in fact, are still linked to football in different roles, from grassroots football coaches to television commentators, passing through other institutional positions.

At 47 years old, Martín Posse is the oldest of them all and the only one who has been chosen as coach. The rest have decided to put on their boots again to relive the sensations they had a few years ago. Posse is in charge of training Kunisports, the team chaired by his compatriot Sergio Agüero. At his command will be Ferran Corominas, who returns to play a year and a half after retiring, in 2021, at Atlétic Balears, and also Javi Chica, who left active football in 2019 and is currently the coach of Espanyol’s youth B team. Another technician from the white-and-blue squad (specifically, Cadet A), Alberto Lopo, participates in the Kings League in the Pio FC team, from the streamer mexicana Rivers.

All of them shared a team with another illustrious ex-white-and-blue player: Raúl Tamudo. The one from Santa Coloma de Gramenet has been chosen as the 11th player of Porcinos FC, the team of Ibai Llanos. An addition that did not make Piqué very happy, who threw sarcasm: “We will investigate this signing, as we do with all those in the Kings League, in case there was any issue of drugs or weapons”. In addition to being responsible for institutional coordination at Espanyol, Tamudo also works as an assistant to the club’s sporting director.

Another former Spanish forward, Jonathan Soriano, is the star chosen by Jijantes FC, a team chaired by journalist Gerard Romero. “I had no desire to play again, but this is something different: a show transferred to football 7”, says the one from Pont de Vilomara, who like Corominas retired in 2021, to the ARA. Soriano now serves as a commentator on DAZN. “Once inside I was excited to see all the signings of former teammates with whom I had played at Espanyol”, he adds. The outstanding presence of the parakeet in the tournament has become a call-out effect for other ex-players who, like Soriano, have not lost the competitive spirit that led them to succeed in different clubs throughout their careers: “We want to win” .

In Ultimate Móstoles, by DjMariio, Sergio García plays, who combines this role with that of coach of the youth A del Damm. At the same beer club, in youth C, a good friend and ex-teammate of the former Bon Pastor player, a Joan Verdú, is training there, who will play for De los Troncos, the team chaired by Perxitaa. There he will meet another old acquaintance: Víctor Sánchez. Also participating in this tournament are Dídac Vilà (at Rayo de Barcelona, from Spursito) and Joan Capdevila, who will combine his position in the department of institutional relations at Espanyol with that of a player at Sayans FC, from The Grefg. The one from Tàrrega was surprised by the media impact generated by this tournament: “More people have written to me now than when we were world champions. What the hell is the Kings League?”. At the moment, a competition chaired by Gerard Piqué that bets on entertainment and that a good handful of former Espanyol players aspire to win.
