Ernests Gulbis: when he came to LTS, the cash register was empty

Latvian tennis player and president of the Latvian Tennis Union (LTS) Ernests Gulbis admitted on Monday, January 9, in an interview on the LTV program “Sporta studija” that the LTS coffers were empty when he took over the leadership of this sports association in the fall of 2022.

In September of last year, the best Latvian tennis player of all time, Gulbis, was elected to the position of LTS president, replacing Juri Savicki. The former LTS president was not allowed to continue leading the organization, because after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Sports Law was changed, which now prohibits former State Security Committee (SSC) employees or informants from leading sports federations. As Savickis is a former employee of the KGB, he had to leave his post by October 1, 2022. Savickis led LTS since 1998.

When asked how empty the LTS coffers were when he took over the organization, Gulbis answered briefly: “Empty.”
