Diego Mariño’s exciting goodbye to Sporting: “My dream was to return the team to the First Division”

“I couldn’t leave without saying anything after all these years, after everything you’ve given me and made me feel.” The departure of Diego Mariño to Almería was made official this Thursday, leaving an emotional video with which the man from Vigo, on the verge of tears, wanted to say goodbye to Sporting de Gijón after six and a half seasons with the team. “Even it is not the farewell that I would have liked the most. My dream was, and I have always said it, to return the team to the First Division. I have not been able to achieve it and it is a thorn that I will always carry inside me”, said the Galician , who signs for the Andalusian team until 2024, with the option of one more campaign depending on objectives. There he will meet Rubi, one of the technicians with whom he shared a dressing room in Gijón.

“I want to thank the club, Sporting, all the fans, from first to last, all the club’s workers. Everyone I’ve shared moments with over the years. It’s a very difficult decision, but seeing all the connotations that are given: ending my contract in June, the possibility that Almería gives me to play in the First Division…”, Diego Mariño pointed out. It didn’t take long for him to get emotional, especially when he remembered the affection received from him during his time as a rojiblanco.

“Both my family and I, thank you for the treatment you have had”, he began before stopping for a second to prevent tears from running down his cheeks. “Everything you have given me, the love you have made me feel for everyone from the first moment to the last. I hope that sooner rather than later this club will return to where it deserves, which is the First Division, and you can all enjoy “, I continue.

Diego also wanted to extend his gratitude to his family, who will continue to reside in Gijón for the time being. “You take four sportinguistas with you from the heart for life: my wife, my two children and I. I wish you the best in the future and that Sporting returns to where it deserves. Hopefully I can return as a fan and as a sportinguista and enjoy that promotion that we have all been wishing for years. A thousand million thanks. Good luck. We will see each other again”, he concluded.
