Corvera exalts its athletes

The XXXII Sports Gala of the council recovers its full potential and brings together several hundred athletes in Toso Muñiz

BORJA PINE LAS VEGAS.

All the eyes of the Corverana athletic community returned to focus yesterday, one more day, at the Toso Muñiz sports center in Las Vegas, where the XXXII Sports Gala of the council was held, which recognized the successes of 226 athletes and recovered the format prior to the pandemic with the presence of around half a thousand people in the sports facilities.

At the event, if any figure or entity stood out above the rest, it was Club Deportivo Los Campos for the promotion of several of its teams and for the tribute to Segundo Sánchez Pordomingo, who after having presided over the club since 1991 has left it this year in the hands of Israel Andrés Martín, who was also recognized.

    Motor racing, kickboxing, Dragon Boat, taekwondo, archery, Olympic shooting, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, soccer, triathlon, cycling, petanque, karate, table tennis, athletics, canoeing, rowing and volleyball.

    Mayor Iván Fernández presided over the gala and was helped in the delivery of trophies by the Councilor for Sports, Elena Menéndez; the Councilor for General Services, Rafael Alonso; the councilor of the Popular Party Mª Cinta Mántaras; the councilor for Izquierda Unida, Jesús Domínguez and the councilor for Somos, Rogelio Crespo.

Sánchez Pordomingo and the rest of the directors who have accompanied him in his more than thirty years in office, some of them with the club since its foundation in 1971, have an average age of seventy years and they were the first to recognize that the replacement was necessary. Andrés Martín takes the reins together with Luismi Pérez and Pablo Suárez.

The veteran club, with more than half a century of experience, enjoyed last year being promoted to the first category of its youngest and children’s teams and second youngest and youngest, in addition to standing out for the great sports promotion carried out last season, participating in competitions with twenty-two teams.

It faces this year 2023 with 172 players, a positive number and in the average of recent years. One of the objectives in the short-medium term will be to get a regional team.

At the gala, presided over by the mayor Iván Fernández and which included the participation in the delivery of trophies by the Councilor for Sports, Elena Menéndez; the Councilor for General Services, Rafael Alonso; the councilor of the Popular Party, Mª Cinta Mántaras; the councilor for Izquierda Unida, Jesús Domínguez and the councilor for SOMOS, Corvera Rogelio Crespo.

The first Corverano mayor valued the importance of sport in society in his speech at the event. He highlighted the role of sport as a “school of life” and an element that “imbues society with values.”

After recognizing Club Deportivo Los Campos, individual and team awards for each of the eighteen disciplines present this year were handed out. There were sports represented only by a single athlete, such as motor racing or swimming, and others with a large representation.
