Carolina Marín’s 2023 begins with a ‘Grand Slam’ in Malaysia

2023 brings a new calendar in international badminton. Many changes. And the most striking starts this coming week. Until now there were three Super 1000 tournaments (All England, Indonesia and China), the most important on the World Tour circuit -like the Grand Slams in tennis-, after the Finals. And as of this year a new Super 1000 has been added, in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), which until now had a 750 category and which now opens the year in style. Of these last tournaments, two new ones have also been added for this season.

Carolina Marín starts the season against an old acquaintance and a difficult rival, the Indian Pusarla Sindhu. Both have met a total of 14 times, winning the onubense 9 timesone of them the mythical and historic final at the Rio Olympics. The volantista from Huelva has an intense month of January ahead of her. She is enrolled in three more tournaments, in consecutive weeks: India (Super 750), Indonesia (Super 500) and Thailand (Super 300). Carolina has a golden opportunity to add points since she does not defend ranking points until week 17. That is, everything she gets will be to add. On the other hand, the ranking is already updated to the last year. Previously, due to the pandemic, the number of qualifying weeks was extended, but not anymore. The ranking works in such a way that the points of the ten best results of the last year are added. At the moment Carolina Marín is the ninth in the world.
