Can and should the Spurs acquire Russell Westbrook from the Lakers?

The 2022-2023 NBA season is advancing and there are only a few days left before the deadline for changes in the league, so for several teams it is time to make decisions regarding their aspirations and projects. This is exactly the case of the San Antonio Spurs, who will have to make a decision in the face of the rumors that suggest their interest in Russell Westbrook.

The idea of absorbing Westbrook’s huge contract with the Los Angeles Lakers is very attractive to the Spurs, since beyond taking on the rest of the veteran’s $47 million in salary this season, they could be left with at least one first-round pick. round of the draft and incidentally get out of the agreements of Jakob Poeltl, Doug McDermott and Josh Richardson.

As of today, the Spurs are far from reaching their salary cap, being one of the two teams that are below $100 million in salaries for their payroll, so assuming Westbrook’s contract will not imply them being fined. deluxe.

Their greatest benefit would come from removing the contractual obligation they have with McDermott, with whom they have an agreement of $13.75 million per year until 2023-2024 and, incidentally, they would continue adding material to the draft, something that is more than ideal considering their current reconstruction process.

In this order of ideas for San Antonio it seems like a round deal, but it will depend on whether the Lakers are willing to hand over an unprotected draft pick and even if they will finally consider leaving Westbrook, who has shown a good level in his role or not. as the sixth man this season.
