Freiburg wins 3-1 against Augsburg, creates the first three of the new year.
Historical: With his 341st (!) game as Freiburg coach, Christian Streich (57) replaces club icon Volker Finke (74/340 times Freiburg coach). In the all-time list of the most loyal club coaches, Streich is now fourth behind Werder king Otto Rehhagel (493 appearances), Thomas Schaaf (480/Werder) and Winnie Schäfer (371/KSC).
Streich brings Keitel in place of Höfler, a midfielder (5th yellow). After an infection, Grifo has to wait for his starting eleven debut in 2023. Gregoritsch (129 games/38 goals for Augsburg) scored against his former club to make it 1-0 (13th). Then it gets wild:
29. Minute: Fenerbahce loan Mergim Berisha (5th goal of the season) converts a foul penalty to 1: 1! When cheering, Berisha takes on the fans. The striker provocatively puts his hand to his ear and kneels in front of the Freiburg curve.
The fans romp, record coach Streich cooks – and a minute later celebrates the new lead.
Because Freiburg’s attack tactic after conceding a goal finally works. Back pass after kicking off the central defenders, eight Freiburg storm towards Augsburg-Kiste. Long ball from Lienhart, three stations and 13 seconds later the ball is in the net after Höler’s goal to make it 2-1 (30 th ).
Höfler at Sky: “The impetus is always an issue for us. This is always a good opportunity for us to reply. It’s amazing that it worked.” His comment on Berisha’s jubilant provocation: “Completely unnecessary!”
Clear message from FCA captain Gouweleeuw “We have a lot of young players in the team. They just have to learn that something like this is unnecessary to provoke the fans again. Away games are difficult anyway. You don’t have to give them extra motivation.”
Freiburg goalkeeper Flekken (80th) prevented the 2:2 with a reflex against Kelvin Yeboah, nephew of the legendary striker Anthony Yeboah (among others Frankfurt/HSV). Lienhart hits the header to make it 3-1 (85th).
