Baseball says goodbye to the UCV park

The final series of the 2022-23 season between Tiburones de la Guaira and Leones del Caracas marked the farewell of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) to the Ciudad Universitaria stadium as the main venue for our baseball.

For 71 of the last 72 campaigns of the LVBP, the Chaguaramos park hosted the meetings of the long-haired, sharks, Sabios del Vargas and Patriotas del Venezuela and even the Navegantes del Magallanes, in their last five campaigns with the capital as headquarters between 1964 and 1969, before leaving for the city of Valencia.

Officially inaugurated on December 12, 1951 with a match in which Venezuela, through the pitcher Blas Rodríguez, gave Colombia no hit no run, within the framework of the opening of the baseball discipline of the III Pan American Games, the Universitario stadium, became the venue for professional ball starting in the 1952-53 season, replacing the Cerveza Caracas stadium in San Agustín.

Only in the 1975-76 tournament did the fans of the capital not have their favorite pastime at the UCV. Differences between the owners and the university authorities for the rental fee and they went inside.

The new stadium that the fans of the capital have been demanding for years is ready to be released in a matter of hours.

The “Simón Bolívar” Monumental Stadium will be inaugurated next Thursday, as the main diamond of the Caribbean Series and from the 2023-24 season it will be the new headquarters of the Caracas Lions.

A foundation will be in charge of managing the new sports facility with capacity for 40,000 fans.

Unofficially it emerged that they will give the long-haired ten-year lease, and they are discussing with the new owners of Tiburones so that they alternate a good part of their calendar in the Rinconada park and several games in Macuto.
