Baseball: Abraham Toro and Russell Martin will be part of the Canadian adventure at the World Classic

The snow may cover the streets of Quebec once again, it’s always a good day to talk about baseball.

Moreover, in just five weeks, it will be the kickoff of the World Baseball Classic, which will take place from March 8 to 21.

Third baseman Abraham Toro will be involved, as well as newly retired Russell Martin, in a coaching role.

Toro and Martin met Sunday at a Baseball Academy Canada charity event.

The last time Martin was on a baseball field. He was wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers jersey. The former receiver will take on Team Canada in March in a brand new role.

“It’s been a while since I’ve set foot on a court and the WBC is always nice. I’m going to coach in the bullpen and I’m going to do what the head coach asks me. I will surely help the receivers and give information on the opposing players,” he said.

Even if the Quebecois is bored with diamonds, a full-time return to baseball is not on the program. At least not in the short term.

“I have three little girls at home and I’m enjoying this part of my life, he explained. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t get halfway involved when I decide to get involved. I want to do it with my heart and with everything I have. »

The Canadian formation has not yet been revealed publicly, but Abraham Toro confirms that he will be on the adventure, before starting his 1st season with the Milwaukee Brewers.

“It’s been a dream since I was little to represent Canada at the World Baseball Classic and I was talking to the head coach yesterday and he told me that I would play second base. I’m really looking forward. »

Toro believes his preparation will be even more heightened next season, as he faces several established starting pitchers in major league baseball. These will often be used between four and six innings, rather than one or two innings, during the major preparatory schedule.
