Barcelona sued LaLiga as the operator of the Spanish League for refusing to increase the salary limit by 15 percent. The Catalan giants feel discriminated against.
ESPN reported that the refusal had something to do with Barcelona’s reluctance to participate in a partnership with CVC Capital Partners, which is worth a total of two billion euros.
Of the 42 clubs in the top two divisions of the Spanish League, only four have refused this cooperation, including Barcelona. The rest received funding for infrastructure improvements and modernization of the club, as well as an increase in the salary cap by 15 percent.
Instead, CVC gets 11 percent of LaLiga’s TV broadcasting rights revenue for 50 years. So, the points related to the salary cap are what Barcelona are concerned about.
The Blaugrana took this case to the Barcelona court, stating that LaLiga’s failure to provide a salary cap increase of 15 percent was the same as making Xavi Hernandez’s squad unable to compete on a draw with their rivals.
“We have filed a commercial complaint. We believe the club’s rights have been violated,” said Vice President of Barcelona, Rafa Yuste, Friday (13/1/2023).
Barcelona’s move to take this case to a local court was due to an appeal against LaLiga’s refusal that was also not accepted by the Spanish Football Federation’s UEFA License Appeal Committee. LaLiga also has reasons for their attitude.
LaLiga believes Barcelona have increased their spending limit to 100 percent after pulling the economic lever many times last summer, allowing them to bring in Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde.
Therefore, if Barcelona is given a salary cap increase of 15 percent, LaLiga is of the opinion that it will be the other teams who will suffer the most. Especially now that Pedri et al are at the top of the LaLiga standings with 41 points from 16 matches.
