L’Orne hebdo: What is your assessment of this first leg?

Yann Lemesle: She was very good. We had started badly by taking only one point in the first match (Alençon had been penalized for licensing problems, editor’s note). It was quite a handicap. Today, we are in the lead with one unit ahead of Argentan. It’s positive and linked to the very good behavior of the players. It’s up to us now not to make any other mistakes that would be hard to make up for.

Alençon has almost achieved a faultless (four wins, one draw). What were the ingredients that made this success possible?

In my eyes, we have the most balanced team in the pool with players capable of replacing each other. During the offseason, we had worked to have a workforce with reserves in the event of injury to one or two players and, thus, not to disturb the team’s results. This is our strength! I also think that by having announced our goal of rising to N2, the players are more involved in training.

The team also benefited from the contribution of young recruits.

Tom (Germain) continued to progress. It is now ranked N1 in doubles and is close to N1 in singles. He is still very young. Lyse (Gagliardi) brings what I expected of her: niaque and fighting spirit. All this creates emulation in the group.

With all these green lights, the objective is the same as at the start of the season: to finish first in the pool?

Yes, to qualify for the accession play-offs, scheduled for the beginning of May. We made it our goal. We could have gotten there in 2020 but there was the Covid. Last year, with Dives, the best N3 team, it was complicated. This season, we have the opportunity to get there.

How is the rise crucial for the future of the club?

Now, N3 teams no longer receive subsidies from the Region. You must at least be in N2. If we want to continue to evolve at the national level, we must therefore go up. Otherwise, it will be difficult to retain players.

Next match: Lillebonne – Alençon, Saturday January 28, at 4 p.m.
