Avilés was a party: chronicle of San Silvestre

Avilés dismissed the year on the run in a party in style to celebrate the “_San Silvestre” of the third city of Asturias. The weather accompanied and thousands of Avilesinos took to the streets to enjoy a test that is now in its 34th edition. The winners were David Alfonso García, from the University of Oviedo team, and Paula Herrero, from Vicky Foods Athletics. David Alfonso García entered the finish line first and set a time of 14 minutes and 33 seconds. The man from Aviles, brother of the well-known athlete Irene Alfonso, already won the “San Silvestre” last year and started as a favorite in this new edition.

Paula Herrero, from Aviles, was the sixth fastest of all the runners and the first in the female category, with fifteen minutes and 51 seconds. Herrero, like the male winner, was a favorite and also already won the “San Silvestre” of 2020, the last before the stoppage due to the coronavirus.

Along with David Alfonso García, Adrián Iglesias Redondo, from Toscaf Recta Final, and Víctor González Carrera, from the Oriente Atletismo club entered the men’s podium. In the women’s category, the second was María García González, from the Athletics Albacete team, and the third was Carmen Mantilla Ruiz, from Chanwas.

That of 2022 was a “San Silvestre” that will be remembered for the festive atmosphere of the city, which even exceeded the forecasts of the organization itself, which falls to Toscaf Atlética Avilesina. Between children and adults, some 2,700 runners gathered, plus many others who participated without a bib number. “Everything went very well and we are very happy for all the work that goes into organizing the test,” explains Gerardo González, president of Toscaf, who organized his second “San Silvestre” without counting the one in 2021, the year of covid, which was virtual “There was a bit of wind the day before, which prevented us from putting anything else we had in mind, but the temperature was perfect,” explains González. The “San Silvestre” from Avilés also did not have to regret serious injuries. “Many people took to the streets, because this test has a festive connotation and people like it”, emphasizes the president of Toscaf. “We have completely recovered the ‘San Silvestre’ again after such bad years due to the covid. We once again saw the full illusion of the people and the streets were full during the tour,” González emphasizes.
