Australian Open 2023 – Without Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev: Nick Kyrgios reacts mockingly to semi-final candidates

“Nice little 250 tournament,” the polarizing Australian replied to British sportswriter James Gray’s tweet.

This had listed all possible players who have a chance of a semi-final ticket at the Australian Open after the elimination of Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz.

What is striking about the list is that most of the players will not have appeared very often, even among those interested in tennis. In addition to the conqueror of Zverev, Michael Mmoh, names like Jeffrey John Wolf, Ben Shelton or Alexei Popyrin appear on the list.

The most prominent player who still has a chance of a place in the semi-finals in Melbourne is Brit Andy Murray. After two marathon matches, he prevailed against Matteo Berettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis and is in the third round.

The highest placed in the world rankings is the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut. Thus, the world number twelfth can have justified hopes for his first Grand Slam semi-final. His next hurdle, however, is the roly-poly Murray.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios is recovering from an injury to his knee. The local hero had to cancel the start in his home country at short notice because he suffers from knee problems that he wants to have treated.
