Atlético does not address the return of the shield and replies that it was “an interested leak”

Huge disappointment among the fans and a certain insipid taste among those attending the meeting of the Atlético de Madrid social commission held this afternoon. Some of the groups that make up this commission had reported that today the possibility of holding a referendum between the rojiblancos members would be discussed to question them if they wanted the classic shield to return, the one that has represented Atlético de Madrid since 1947, when it left the wings of the Atlético Aviación, until 2017, at which time the club implemented the new shield unilaterally and without consulting its social mass.

However, after almost three hours of meeting, the club has issued a statement in which it explains that “in relation to the interested information that has emerged in the last few hours about the Atlético de Madrid shield being one of the issues discussed At this meeting, it should be clarified that at no time was this topic included on the agenda.

Some of the attendees at this meeting have clarified to ABC, first of all, that in the call there was no point on the agenda, nor that of the shield, nor any of the other issues that have been discussed.

The club’s statement adds that “given the confusion generated on social networks with this matter, the Social Commission has made the determination not to deal with any aspect related to the club’s shield due to the lack of a climate conducive to reflection within the different realities of the fans, a circumstance that could harm the team in this second phase of the championship when the sporting objectives are decided.

For this reason, they have announced that “this issue will not be dealt with, debated or analyzed by the Social Commission until the current sports season ends, although the club has promised to prepare during these months a report on the impact of a hypothetical change and submit it to the Social Commission at that time. The club has promised that it will be then when the debate on this matter will be opened in the Social Commission itself.

The commission, between disappointment and moderate optimism

Given this response from the club, the assessments that some members of the commission have made to ABC (none publicly at the moment) move between “disappointment”, like the majority of the fans, “skepticism” and “optimism”. moderate” of some, who take these words from the club as a promise that when the season ends they will ask the commission about the possibility of submitting to a referendum the return of the classic shield.

The representative of the Athletic Front has not attended the meeting

Two weeks ago the ultra group “Frente Atlético” left the social commission due to “disagreements” about how some issues were being handled, especially the inaction on the issue of the shield. “For the leaders of Atlético de Madrid it seems that the issue of the shield is no longer so important and they do not want to deal with it in this commission,” they criticized in the statement announcing their departure. Along these lines, and despite speculation, the representative of the Frente Atlético did not attend the meeting held today.

An “open conversation” with Courtois

On the other hand, the club has also reported that in past committee meetings it was agreed that the components of the “Paseo de los Jugadores Centenarios” (new name for what was the “Paseo de las Leyendas”) will have “the obligation to maintain a respectful attitude towards both the club and its fans”. In this sense, they have ensured that “the commission agreed and sent a letter to the player Thibaut Courtois considering that he failed to meet the criteria to keep his plaque in statements that hurt the athletic fans, offering him the possibility of rectifying and apologizing.” The club has reported that they have received a response from Courtois and that there is “an open conversation with the goalkeeper to clarify this situation.”

Who composes the social commission?

The CEO and top shareholder of the club, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, chaired today’s meeting. Gil Marín himself argued in an open letter to the members that the constitution of the commission sought to find “social peace” and listen to all sectors of the fans to make consensual “relevant decisions, such as future shirt designs and other products, as well as discuss aspects related to the history of the club.

Said commission was made up of ten people who represent different sectors of the mattress fans: a member of the Athletic Senate (subscribers with more than 50 years of seniority), a representative of the International Union of Peñas (representing more than 300 penyas), a member of the largest supporters club in the Community of Madrid (Peña Atlética Remedios de Colmenar Viejo), a representative of the supporters club with the most followers from outside Madrid (Peña Atlética Soriana), a member of the association “Los 50” (which seeks to recover “the true history of Atlético de Madrid”), a component of the Atleti volunteers, a disabled member, a VIP subscriber, a club shareholder and a member of the animation stands (Frente Atlético).
