Arne Engels, from Club NXT to a starting place in the Bundesliga: “The right step” | Bundesliga

A transfer that has slipped a bit through the net: Arne Engels exchanged Club NXT for Augsburg in the winter mercato. The young midfielder already made a successful debut last weekend.

A new Belgian in the Bundesliga. Arne Engels may have lost with Augsburg at Dortmund, but the 19-year-old Belgian immediately gave his calling card with some successful actions and a nice assist.

His coach Enrico Maaßen also thought so, who praised him. “Arne played an excellent game. He not only let himself slide with the current, but was decisive for us.”

Engels himself was delighted with his debut in the Bundesliga. “It was a great feeling to be in the starting eleven in my first game. I tried to do my best and help the team.”

“It is a pity that we could not reward ourselves with a point. But I am convinced that if we continue to perform like this in the coming weeks, we will score a lot of points.” Augsburg needs those points, because it camps in the relegation zone.

“This is the right step in my career”

A lot has changed for English in a short time. At the beginning of December he played his last game for Club NXT in the Challenger Pro League, a month and a half later he plays for Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

“Everything is new: new club, new country. That was a bit stressful, but I was well taken care of by the club and the teammates. The latter help me if I don’t understand something in German.”

Engels has played for Club Brugge since he was 12 years old. With 2 goals and 6 assists, the midfielder was one of the standouts in the Challenger Pro League, but he didn’t wait for a chance in the first team.

This is a big step for me: I left my girlfriend, my family and my friends.

“I am convinced that this is the right step in my career, to develop myself as a player and to get better. I think the Bundesliga is the competition that suits me best.” He could already show that on his debut.

“This is a big step for me: I left my girlfriend, my family and my friends. My girlfriend has another year and a half to study. I will miss them, but luckily there is Facetime and she will come and visit me.”

Perhaps today, because then Engels may play his second game in the Bundesliga, at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
